Flower Power

Every once in a while between wakeboarding treks, there's a little down time during which I can take a moment to stop and smell the roses, as it were. Here are a few sniffs from Pat's garden.

Technical Difficulties

Thank you for your patience.

For some as-yet-unknown reason, we have been able to surf the internet at a snail's pace. A breathtaking speed not seen since the early 90's. As a result, pictures have not been viewable, much less uploadable on the Latimer computers lately.

But here we are again, with much to see and read. We've been out and about with "the children": wakeboarding, riding ferries, puppy classes, walking, meeting new people, and discovering new ways that Indy can annoy the humans that live here.

Our first excursion was a trip to south Langley for Amber's birthday party. We visited a few local wineries and had a picnic at their place. Food was good, drinks were tasty, and the company was great.

July 8, 2006: Indy

Since then, it's been weekend after weekend of short trips to Gibsons in order to visit with the Stuart clan and to get a bit of wakeboarding in here and there. Our first boating excursion of '06 was with Chris, Carolyn, and Evan. It was late Saturday start because we couldn't seem to find the right equipment and we had a bit of a battery/starting problem with the boat. But thanks to Chris' quick thinking and work to pull his car battery out and jump start the boat, we were finally on our way.

July 15, 2006: Chris' first go.

July 15, 2006: I don't think the board is supposed to be pointing in that direction.

July 15, 2006: As soon as Indy was in the water, she'd motor for shore. Grabbing her was the only way we could get her back in the boat.

July 15, 2006: Carolyn's turn.

July 15, 2006: All done!

The next day, just Kristina, Don, and I went. It was a yet another gorgeous day that gave Don his first dip of the season.

July 16, 2006: So casual. Notice how she even takes the opportunity refit her suit.

July 16, 2006: No boarding for Don. He's a classic old-school skier.

July 16, 2006: Some spectacular wake from other boats.

July 16, 2006: It doesn't get much better than this.

And just this past weekend, Jeremy (who's just in town this week) and PJ came out on Sunday to partake in some water activities. Jeremy was an all-star, pulling out a few 180° jumps as well as a previously-unseen, ropeless 360°.

July 23, 2006: Jeremy tests the water.

July 23, 2006: Believe it or not, Jer actually pulled himself out of this jam. One-handed no less.

July 23, 2006: Nice height.

July 23, 2006: PJ muscles his way up.

July 23, 2006: PJ's more a skier than a boarder.

July 23, 2006: Now he's got it.

July 23, 2006: My turn.

July 23, 2006: I love jumping.

So that's been it -- more or less -- for the last few weeks. Stay in touch and we'll have as many new pics and updates as possible. See you soon.

New Project II

A bit more time and effort was put into the new website today. The front page is pretty much done -- my favourite part is the random image generator that shuffles the intro pictures each time you visit -- but now's when the hard part comes. What comes next?

Rob and I need to come up with some basic framework to base the site on. Content, organization, and features. If only all that was as easy as the designing was.

Yeah, right.

In the meantime, I suppose I've slowed down a bit on the picture uploads. However, I've been having great trouble trying to view anything that's already there. I don't know if it's my computer ("Sweetie, I need a new iMac.") or the blogspot site in general. There are a number of pictures I need to show around, including some new wakeboarding images from the weekend, plus some mountain goat pics from our last trip to Calgary.

Stick with me.

New Project

Rob called me the other day and told me he just registered Dressel.ca. Sweet.

So now I've got a new project to work on. The first step is to create a new index page for the site and to establish new splash pages for each of the Barbara, Robert, and Marcus sections. I'm glad this is finally underway -- it's something I've wanted to do for many years, but never managed to get off my butt to get it started.

I don't know how it'll all affect the continuation of The Latimer Free Press, but I'm sure that whatever I finally decide to do, it'll be in the interests of simplicity and ease. For me.

Stay tuned for further updates on this.

Buntzen Lake

With all our well-deserved time off, Kristina & I took the dogs to Buntzen Lake on Monday. The lake is surprisingly close considering that we had never been there before and had only a vague idea of how to get there. But it was a fun trip -- they've got a good sized off-leash dog area set up with fences and beach. Indy really enjoyed herself and Kirby basically went nuts everytime I threw a stick into the water.

July 10, 2006: Hopefully she'll be as eager to jump in when she's on a dock.

July 10, 2006: Ever seen that VW Rabbit logo?

July 10, 2006: Another shaking shot.

July 10, 2006: In puppy-class they call this a "motivated recall".

Calgary III

And on the way back, we stopped by a small lake between Golden and Revelstoke -- just to see if we could get Indy to swim.

And you know what? She did.

July 3, 2006: Looks like she's going to be a splasher.

July 2, 2006: Don't know why her left ear droops when she's wet, though.

July 2, 2006: Another shaking photo. I've got to start a series of these...

July 2, 2006: And in case you were wondering... Yes, Kirby is still around.

July 2, 2006: Drying in the sun.

Calgary II

There was a lot of play-time at Maggie & Dingo's house. Whether it was in the backyard or in the house, Indy seemed to really get along with Dingo. It's funny, because when Dingo came to visit in June, they really didn't pay much attention to each other at all -- but this time, they were best buddies.

July 2, 2006: Smile. You're on candid camera.

July 2, 2006: Tug of War with Dingo.

July 2, 2006: Digging in.

July 2, 2006: Play-time with Dingo.

July 2, 2006: BONK!

Calgary I

On Sunday, Craig & Jennifer, Kristina & I, and the dogs went to big park in Calgary (the name escapes me at the moment). Although there were vast tracks of land, Indy did well to stay near Mom & Dad. It seems as if she still a bit needful of protection and reassurance.

July 2, 2006: Getting bigger all the time.

July 2, 2006: Kristina really liked this picture, so here it is.

July 2, 2006: Notice Kristina's right hand. Treats at the ready. A must for all puppy owners.

July 2, 2006: At this pace, Indy will meet & exceed Kirby's claim to fame as the World's Most Photographed Dog.

July 2, 2006: I liked this picture of Dingo. Cool silhouette.

A "Real" Dog

For 5 years Kirby has lulled Kristina & I into thinking we actually owned a dog. But now we've discovered that dogs actually do more than cuddle, sleep, and eat.

They attack sprinklers. And they dig. They dig holes. Big holes.

And they bury things.

These things, Indy has taught us.

June 29, 2006: Indy discovers the sprinkler.

June 29, 2006: Look closely and you can see how she pushes the dirt on top of the duck with her snout (click on image for larger version).

June 29, 2006: "What'd I do?"

Disappointment & Frustration

I have to admit: as great of a Canada Weekend I had, it all came to a crashing halt at approximately 2:17pm PST.

Friday, June 30th, was the last day of work before summer, which in itself can only be a good thing; however, I began the day with an approved late arrival due to the Germany v Argentina match that morning. As we all know by now, Jens Lehman made millions of Germans as happy as little Mädchens. I was grinning ear to ear.

The next day in Calgary, Kristina & I discovered that our beloved union, the BCTF, came to final agreement with the BCPSEA (aka The Government) and inked a deal giving Kristina & I a 16% raise over 5 years and a $4000 cash bonus. I was grinning from ear all the way around my head, back to the same ear.

Then, upon arriving at Craig & Jennifer's place, I was able to watch the last of the England v Portugal match. With England losing YET AGAIN on penalty kicks, my head became nothing more than lips and teeth. It was the greatest Canada Weekend one could possibly ask for.

But when you're floating on thin air, you'll eventually come crashing down to Earth again. Recall Tuesday afternoon at about 2:17pm. After 1 hour and 28 minutes of regular play -- only 2 minutes from penalty kicks -- Italy managed to score the winning goal that put them in the World Cup Final and Germany in Saturday's consolation final.

My day was ruined.

And when today rolled around, my levels of anger and frustration peaked. Although I was happy that France won, I couldn't contain my annoyance with the Portugese players and their constant cheating, diving, and acting. In fact, their worst offender, Cristiano Ronaldo, angered me so much, that I felt compelled to represent my frustration by Photoshopping an image of the little weasel.

There. Now I feel a bit better.
